Abstract

Abstract: The paper is a critical examination into the nexus of transportation infrastructure development, regional economic growth, and social changes (urbanization and modernization). Relying on previous studies, it begins with learning experiences from other countries regarding transportation infrastructure development and economic growth. The discussion moves into social impacts of transportation infrastructures development in Java in the colonial era in order to address similar problems which may occur as a result of the TransJawa tollroad project, with a specif ic case of East Java province. This paper shows that there is no direct causality of infrastructure development to economic growth, yet both have been catalyst for the velocity of inevitable urbanization as well as modernization.
Keywords: economic growth, East Java, modernization, transportation, urbanization
